Pashmina
:
Nepal
is known for its finely woven unique Pashmina products.
Pashmina, a precious and luxurious fiber with unparalleled
quality, is commonly popular as Cashmere Pashmina. It
is a very fine quality of wool made from the inner coat
of hair of mountain goat (Chyangra in Nepali) of the
distant and chilly Himalayan regions .Nepal being the
country of the Himalayas is naturally suited for Pashmina
production. It is well known for wonderful qualities
like warmth, softness, silky texture and lightness.
It is said to be much warmer than sheep wool. It grows
softer with use thus making it the wool of the highest
grade and a very appealing textile in the world.
The
underbelly of goats has two layers of inner fur that
protect them during the winters of the Himalayas. -
layer of coarse and dead fibers and the layer of thin
and real fibers which are deeply rooted in the coarse
outer layer. This is called Pashmina .It is collected
by hand and combed with the help of a special comb and
stretched and cleaned up very carefully to remove dirt
before hand spinning. The making of a Pashmina is indeed
a labor demanding and time consuming process which requires
immense patience, high skill and much devotion as even
the smallest carelessness can hamper the quality of
the product.. Pashmina with soft and natural colors
are considered to be more expensive and of better quality
than the artificial blends which have vibrant colors.
Some
Pashmina industries have started importing machine-made
yarn from China and using silk instead. This has helped
to improve the quality of Pashmina as it would not prick
the skin like the dead fibers would have done. The Pashmina
which used to be a favourite fashion item of the huge
celebrities has reduced to become a footpath item due
to large availability as well as worsening quality.
Spinning
:
The pashmina wool is collected every spring, and is
basically spun by hand. The yarn is spun on a spinning
wheel locally known as ‘Charkha’. At present
the use of hand spun Pashmina wool yarn has been replaced
by imported machine spun yarn.
Weaving
:
Handlooms are still used to weave Pashmina products
instead of the power looms as flimsy Pashmina wool can
be damaged by it .Weaving is done with a shuttle carrying
the soft Pashmina wool through the silk warp. It takes
about 4 days to weave a single Pashmina shawl. Pashmina
with silk are woven with silk running the length of
the weave, and Pashmina on the width of the weave.
Dyeing :
Dyeing also needs immense patience and much experience
otherwise the quality of the product may be damaged.
It is also done by hand and only natural colours and
pure water are used .Dyeing is done at a temperature
just below boiling point for nearly an hour. After dyeing
pashmina is given for embroidery, beadwork, printing,
shading etc.
Silk
pashmina :
Pashmina is often blended with Silk to produce wool
with softness, beautiful sheen, and of course, durability
.Silk pashmina produces a classy finish, exotic sheen,
and soft delicate touch, that is why it is the most
popular fabric in the world these days. It is made of
the combination of fine quality Silk and Pashmina .Some
silk pashminas are a combination includes more pashmina
and less silk while some are a blend of more silk and
less pashmina. But the most popular is a 70% pashmina/30%
silk blend. This blend is tightly woven and is quite
soft and light-weight.50- 50 is also a common blend.

Maintaining
Pashmina products :
Pashmina
is hand woven that’s why pashmina products are
very delicate and could get spoilt when washing if proper
care is not taken. Professional dry cleaning is the
best way to clean them. However cleaning them in washing
machines can deform the shape and damage the quality.
Directions
for hand washing :
Brush
gently to remove the excess fiber. Hand wash in cold
water with mild detergent soap or with low pH hair shampoo
place on a towel and roll up together to squeeze out
the water To dry the shawl place the shawl flat on the
ground and let it air dry Lightly stretch and level
the edges Use a soft brush widthwise to give the shawl
a soft and fluffy feel. Lightly press with steam iron.
